Dyno Shootouts
Is it time for another trip to Bike Week?
The Delta has been in a few dyno shootouts, and so far is 3-and-0, with some nice trophies on the shelf. That's good, because I can't seem to win anything when corners are involved. >8-/
I have to admit, when Scott Rehl brought his big-bore Dent-engined Spondon to Daytona for the AMI HP shootout, I was deeply worried when I heard that bike spin up.
Scott and I arranged for time on a local Dynojet dyno earlier in Bike Week, as we had both just got our bikes working and were hoping to get them dialed-in before the HP shootout. At the competition, you get one or two pulls (I forget) but there was no time to play with stuff. You just get on and make the runs.
So, in our early test, Scott' bike was plagued with a high RPM misfire and could not make a full pull on the dyno, but the way it yanked the drum through the midrange got my attention. It was ferocious. This was going to be dicey!
Unfortunately, he wasn't able to run it in the HP shootout due to mechanical issues later in the week, but I think it would have been a very close thing. At any rate, the peak number would not have told the story of the tremendous midrange his engine was making. So- I like to try to find ways to visualize that. I'll share it with you later !

We were angling for a rematch in 2010, but it was not to be...
